Ex-oficiais da CIA lançam livro em que defendem métodos empregados pela CIA em interrogatórios e detenções na guerra contra o terrorismo, causando polêmica com membros do Senado que participaram do comitê de controle externo das Atividades de Inteligência.
O livro denominado REBUTTAL: The CIA Responds to the Senate Intelligence Committee’s Study of Its Detention and Interrogation Program, será publicado na próxima semana pela editora U.S. Naval Institute Press. Contém inúmeras contribuições de ex-diretores e ex-oficiais da CIA. Destaque-se o seguinte trecho da matéria do Washington Post, com menção a suposta quebra de confiança entre a CIA e o gabinete da presidência de Barack Obama:
"The book, which includes essays by former CIA directors George J. Tenet, Michael V. Hayden and Porter J. Goss, depicts the Senate investigation as a partisan attack that maligned agency employees and dismissed the value of intelligence gained from captured al-Qaeda suspects.
Jose A. Rodriguez Jr., who presided over the interrogation program as head of the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center, wrote the most combative chapter, accusing President Obama of damaging the agency’s ability to trust the White House.
“By calling [agency employees] torturers and hounding them in the courts, President Obama has broken the covenant that exists between the government and the CIA,” Rodriguez wrote. “I worry about what this means for the safety of our nation.”
A Newsweek destaca que a senadora democrata da Califórnia Dianne Feinstein, que secretariou o comitê que estudou e produziu relatórios sobre os métodos de detenção e interrogatório da CIA criticou a nova publicação, que não aportaria contribuições relevantes ou novidades aos depoimentos já realizados por oficiais da agência.
"...Feinstein characterized the essays in the book as recycled criticisms from the website that "do not contradict" the committe's conclusions: "that these interrogation techniques were brutal and did not produce information that was not already obtained in more traditional and acceptable ways by intelligence and law enforcement personnel..."
